Denver Health Foundation Welcomes Four Accomplished Leaders to Its Board of Directors

In this Story:

Denver Health Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of four distinguished new members to its Board of Directors: Elaine Gantz Berman, Montgomery C. “Monty” Cleworth, Graham Hollis, and Doug Seserman. Together, they bring deep experience in philanthropy, finance, media, civic leadership, and community engagement — strengthening the Foundation’s commitment to supporting Denver Health, Denver’s essential health system and most trusted health care partner for life’s journey.

“We’re honored to welcome these outstanding leaders to the board,” said Fred Glick, Board Chair of Denver Health Foundation. “Each of them brings a unique perspective and a strong commitment to Denver’s health and vitality. Their insight and experience will be invaluable as we work to advance Denver Health’s mission and expand access to high-quality care for everyone in our community.”

Elaine Gantz Berman

Elaine Gantz Berman has dedicated her professional life and community service to improving outcomes for children and families, with a focus on public education from early childhood through higher education. She was appointed by Governor John Hickenlooper to serve as a trustee on the board of Metropolitan State University of Denver. Prior to her higher education board service, Elaine was elected as Congressional District 1’s representative on the Colorado State Board of Education and previously served two terms on the Denver Board of Education, including four years as board president. Governor Jared Polis also named her co-chair of his education transition committee when he was first elected governor.

Before serving in elected office, Elaine spent 18 years as a program officer at the Denver-based Gary Community Ventures (formerly the Piton Foundation), working on a wide range of children’s issues including child advocacy, child poverty, teen pregnancy, child health, and public education. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards and commissions and helped to found the Colorado Children’s Campaign, the Adoption Exchange, the Colorado Education Initiative, and the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center. More recently, she has helped launch the Colorado Trustee Network, Educate Denver, and Colorado Chooses Vaccines. A strong advocate for children, she also uses her personal philanthropy to support these efforts and the organizations behind them.

Elaine’s life and work have been shaped by her Cuban-born mother, as well as a two-year period in Cali, Colombia, where she and her late husband, Steve, both worked in community health centers. She is fluent in Spanish and holds an MSPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health. She has two sons and two grandchildren. Her long-standing commitment to children, families, and public institutions closely aligns with Denver Health Foundation’s efforts to improve health and opportunity for families across Denver.

Montgomery C. “Monty” Cleworth

Montgomery C. “Monty” Cleworth brings decades of investment, governance, and philanthropic leadership experience to Denver Health Foundation’s Board of Directors. He joined Monticello Associates in 1997, an asset management consultant to endowments, foundations, and high-net-worth clients, and retired as Managing Director in 2023. He continues to serve as an active advisor and mentor to the firm’s research and consulting teams, helping mission-driven institutions steward their resources for long-term impact.

Prior to joining Monticello, Monty was a Managing Director and Senior Vice President in charge of the investment advisory department at Hanifen, Imhoff Inc., then the largest investment bank headquartered in the Rocky Mountain region. Previously, he was a portfolio manager at Founders Asset Management in Denver, where he managed three fixed income funds and served as the firm’s economist. Earlier in his career, Monty was a Vice President at First Boston Corporation, where he worked with major New York institutions on government, mortgage, and corporate fixed income transactions.

Monty has a long record of community engagement through board service. His current and past board memberships include Rocky Mountain Public Media (board, 2024-present), Citizens for Arts to Zoo (2024-present), Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (board, 2001-2007; Treasurer, 2003-2007), and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (board, 2009-2023; chair, 2017-2019). He also established the Cleworth LEAP Scholarship at East High School, a $100,000 annual grant that helps finance a student’s education, and the CAL Legacy Program at the Denver Architecture Foundation, which introduces public school students to architecture.

Monty is a graduate of Amherst College (BA in economics), earned his MBA at Stanford University, and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He resides in Denver with his wife, Susannah Drake, has climbed the 100 highest peaks in Colorado, and has traveled to 177 of 193 countries. His blend of financial expertise and commitment to educational opportunity and community institutions is a strong complement to Denver Health Foundation’s role in supporting exceptional, accessible care for all.

Graham Hollis

Graham Hollis brings a global financial background and a deep commitment to Colorado’s civic life to Denver Health Foundation’s Board of Directors. Originally from England, he moved to Colorado in 1977 to continue his financial career and quickly made the state his permanent home.

Graham became a CPA and spent 15 years with KPMG and in commercial real estate. This foundation prepared him for a transformative career spanning two decades in international telecommunications, media, and finance. At Liberty Global, Inc. – then the world’s largest international cable company operating in 14 countries – he directed investments and strategic opportunities throughout Asia and served on boards of portfolio companies across Asia, Europe, and Latin America. In 2012, following a successful corporate career, he established his own consulting practice, applying decades of experience to strategic advisory work.

Today, Graham contributes to Colorado’s civic and environmental health through board service with several municipal and nonprofit organizations, including the High Line Canal Conservancy. His long-standing engagement reflects his deep roots in the state and his passion for helping build strong, healthy communities.

He holds a degree in natural sciences from Cambridge University in England, where he began his professional journey as a chartered accountant. His decision to relocate to Denver allowed him to combine career ambitions with a lifelong love of cycling and skiing on Colorado’s terrain. Graham’s experience with complex organizations and his commitment to community stewardship support Denver Health Foundation’s mission to strengthen health care for Denver residents.

Doug Seserman

Doug Seserman brings more than two decades of experience leading major Jewish nonprofit organizations and guiding transformational philanthropy to his role on Denver Health Foundation’s Board of Directors. He announced his “ReWirement” in October 2025 following a 23-and-a-half-year career as a Jewish nonprofit chief executive officer. Most recently, Doug served as CEO of Americans for Ben-Gurion University in New York City. Before that, he served as President and CEO of JEWISHcolorado, the Jewish Federation in Denver. During his tenure, Doug led fundraising achievements of more than $500 million in annual campaign revenue and stewarded more than $800 million in endowment assets. Prior to entering the nonprofit arena, he built a strong foundation in the private sector through roles in cable television and consumer products marketing.

Doug is known for his creative business vision, results-oriented leadership, and track record of developing people to their highest capacity. His “coaching tree” includes two corporate CMOs, three Jewish Federation CEOs, and two mayors in Israel. He has been recognized nationally and internationally for his impact: in 2023, The Jerusalem Post named him one of the World’s 50 Most Influential Jews; in 2017, the American Business Awards presented him with the Gold Stevie Award for Non-Profit Executive of the Year; and in 2014, he was named to the Forward 50 as one of the fifty most impactful American Jews. In addition to his role on Denver Health Foundation’s Board of Directors, he serves as an ambassador for Ibex Investors and Crusonia Wealth Advisors.

Doug holds a BS and an MBA from Northwestern University. He is an avid cyclist and skier and lives in Denver with his college sweetheart and wife, Sue, the creator and author of Epilectra, a graphic novel series. They have twin adult children, Mariana and Georgeta. Doug’s experience with large-scale campaigns, endowment growth, and community leadership will help Denver Health Foundation connect donor generosity to meaningful improvements in health for people across Denver.
