Open Your Hearts
“Life’s most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Denver Health, long known as the city’s safety net hospital, delivers some 3,500 babies each year, 90% of whom are born into families living below the Federal poverty level. These families have few resources and little discretionary income. As a result, many are forced to choose between items of necessity for their babies, such as cribs and car seats, and more immediate responsibilities such as rent and groceries. It is a situation no parent would want to encounter.
“Open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need,” launched in 2003, helps make life sweeter for Denver’s most vulnerable citizens by collecting strollers, car seats, diapers, blankets and other essentials from the public and area businesses. Last year 3,632 families received new baby goods through this innovative public service campaign.
“Every child is deserving of a healthy start in life,” says Patricia A. Gabow, M.D., and CEO of Denver Health. “We fulfill this vision through our quality health care and genuine commitment to the metro Denver community.”
Hosting a baby shower is the ideal way to encourage group support for the “Newborns in Need” campaign. These private showers of love can happen at any time throughout the year and will help us meet the challenge of sending every needy family home with essentials.
